Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
