Colombia's President Says 'I Will Take Up Arms Again' should American Forces Invades.

President Trump and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their exchange, heightening strains in their relations after American military units struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates cocaine mills and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Growing Tensions and Claims

Talking to the press over the weekend, Trump hinted at similar armed intervention against Colombia, stating the nation is also "very ill" and governed by a problematic figure who enjoys creating cocaine and trafficking it to the US."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally involved in the trade.

A Frayed Alliance

Colombia for decades served as a key ally of the United States in the campaign against narcotics trade and received wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have soured dramatically since Trump was elected.

Colombia’s drug trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions like the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom disbanded after a landmark accord.

The President's Firm Rebuttal

When asked whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was being considered regarding Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader and I am not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. Cease defaming me," he expressed online.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will become thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And if they detain me, whom many of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will release the powerful force of the populace," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

Petro spent part of his youth belonging in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed he did not engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he participated in writing the nation's constitution in 1991 and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the capital city before winning the presidency.

"I swore to abstain from using a gun ... but in defense of my country I would take up the fight," he vowed.

Heightened Measures and Cross-Political Opposition

Colombia's defense chief reported that the national leader's security detail had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump, but voices from across Colombian politics have denounced the possibility of a US attack against their nation.

Political and Economic Strains

Washington cancelled the president's entry visa following he called on US troops to ignore unlawful commands. In October, the US enacted financial sanctions against the president, the first lady and several associates.

Simultaneously the US was building up its military presence near Venezuela and targeting suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted operations on maritime targets off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
